What a summer it has been so far for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County!  The Clubs host summer programs to make sure area children have a safe place to spend the day while school is out for the summer.  It's not only safe, though; it's fun!

  • Thirty members attended a two-week Science Camp at ECU.  Members learned about endangered animals, animal behavior, how astronauts survive in space, and they solved a mystery while participating in a crime scene investigation.  Members also learned how to use a telescope and built their own telescope to use at home.

  • Twenty-two members participated in an offshore chartered boat excursion out of Swansboro that was part of the “Take a Kid Fishing” day.  The weather was great, but the wind created rough seas.  Most caught fish, and some became a little seasick.  The “Take a Kid Fishing Foundation” made this unforgettable activity possible.

  • Sixty members of the Jarvis Club helped paint murals on the parking lot fence at the Greenville Museum of Art.  If you are in the downtown area, please stop by and see their extraordinary artwork.

  • Six members attended the Camp Sertoma Leadership Camp held in Danbury, NC.  This week-long camp provided skills the children can use to enhance their academic and leadership capabilities.  This camp was free to our kids, thanks to the NC Bankers Association.

There have been several field trips this summer as well, including Galaxy of Sports, West Water Park, City Pool, Chuck E. Cheese, Star City Skating, Marble Kids Museum and the NC Aquarium.  The fun continues through late July and early August.  Upcoming field trips include Jungle Rapids, NC Museum of Natural Sciences, Kinston Indians baseball game, 4-H Camp, Imagination Station, ECU tour, Martin Community College tour and the Neuseway Nature Park.

The Club members aren't always on the road, however.  They have several fabulous activities right at their units.  The second half of the summer will feature Tie Dye T-shirt Day, Field Day, spelling bee, game room tournaments, community service projects, nursing home visit, Minute to Win It competitions, essay contest, and several guest speakers representing the Armed Forces, and the police and fire departments.
