School’s almost out for the summer, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County is gearing up for summer programming. All five units are hosting programs through the summer months to make sure children in Pitt County have a safe and fun place to spend their summer.

Space is still available for more kids to sign up, and they do not need to be Club members during the school year to join. Also, parents may sign their children up for just the weeks they need a safe place for their children, or for the entire summer. The program is open to children ages 6 through 18.

The summer program has daily fun activities at the Clubs, including some of the cornerstone programming of the Boys & Girls Clubs, such as Street Smart, Healthy Habits, Keystone and Torch Club. There are also several field trips, including Star City Skating, Chuck E. Cheese’s, West Water Park, Wet N Wild Emerald Pointe, the Imperial Arts Museum and Planetarium and Bowling.

Free lunch is provided for the children, except on days where they go on a field trip.

The cost of the summer program is $25 per week. The regular hours are 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. However, an early bird program is available from 7 a.m. – 9 a.m. for an additional $4 per day at the Jack Minges Club in Winterville, the Grady White Boats/ER Lewis Family Unit in Greenville and the Dr. Ledyard E. Ross Unit in Ayden.

The Clubs will be closed July 4 and August 23 and 24.

Call (252) 355-2345 to sign your child up for a safe, fun, enriching summer!

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County serves more than 1,600 members from six to eighteen years of age. The club has a total of five operations that includes the Jack Minges Unit in Winterville, the Grady White Boats/ER Lewis Family Unit in Greenville, the Jarvis United Methodist Church Unit in Greenville, the Dr. Ledyard E. Ross Unit in Ayden, and the unit in Farmville. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County strives to provide quality programs of education with a positive learning environment, instilling competence and confidence. Great Futures Start Here!

Joe Pecheles Volkswagen of Greenville is entering the final weeks of its three month pledge to make a donation of $100 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County for each new Volkswagen sold during March, April and May.

“Joe Pecheles Volkswagen is proud to support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Pitt County,” said Brian Pecheles, President of the Pecheles Automotive Group. “We know by supporting the Clubs, we are helping mold future leaders and supporting the future of our community.”

The goal for Joe Pecheles Volkswagen’s donations to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County over the three months is $15,000. By the end of April, the amount raised reached $7,900.

The partnership comes at a crucial time for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County. In recent years, funding the Clubs has counted on for years has been drastically reduced, making it more important than ever for local businesses and individuals to help keep the doors of the Clubs open. The five locations in Pitt County serve an average of 750 students a day, providing not only a safe place for them to go after school, but programming that emphasizes three key areas: academics, character development, and healthy lifestyles.

“We are thrilled that Joe Pecheles Volkswagen has partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County over the years to promote our efforts in the community and to help us raise important funds to meet our mission,” said Jay Faron, Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County. “This promotion is a wonderful way for a local company to have an impact and help the youth that we serve. We are so grateful for the continued support of the Pecheles Automotive Group.”

Joe Pecheles Volkswagen is located at 203 SE Greenville Blvd. in Greenville. You can visit them on the web at www.joepechelesvw.com.

On Saturday, April 28th St. James United Methodist Church held their Annual Spring Fling. As a part of the Spring Fling, a bake sale was also held. This year Volunteer Jane MacDonald organized two days where she brought in supplies to bake brownies with a few of our members to donate to the bake sale. Over the course of two days, 8 of our members had the opportunity to learn a little bit of some baking basics! Simple measurement is a skill that they are taught in school, and now have had the opportunity of putting to good use! Thank you Mrs. Jane for all you do!

Filling up on flapjacks has never been so fun or so philanthropic. The University City Kiwanis Club is hosting its annual Pancake Day to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County on Thursday, May 10, from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. The event takes place at the Jack Minges Club on Fire Tower Rd. The ticket price is $6, which includes three large pancakes, a sausage pattie and a drink on site. You can dine in the Club or under the picnic shelter, or you may take the food to go. The sponsors of the event are Hilton Greenville, Golden Corral and Burger King. Thanks to the generosity of the sponsors and the University City Kiwanis Club, 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County. Fundraising for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County is more crucial than ever. Despite tremendous success raising money that used to be provided by grants and from the government, the Clubs in Pitt County face about a $100,000 shortfall for this year’s operating budget. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County is incredibly grateful for the help of the University City Kiwanis Club and other local organizations who support our efforts to serve the children in our community who need our help the most.

Winterville, N.C. – Dr. Dennis Ross of Ross Orthodontics is closing his office doors to raise awareness for the Boys & Girls Club of America. For two weeks, Ross will ride his bicycle a total of 1,200 miles, from Greenville, NC to Key West, Florida.

Ross will bike 120 miles each day for 10 days making stops at the Boys & Girls Clubs along the way in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, including Myrtle Beach, Beaufort, Savannah, Jacksonville, Cocoa Beach, West Palm Beach, Miami, and Key West. Each afternoon between 3-6 p.m., he will present about smart choices, health and nutrition, and oral care to the children. His journey begins Wednesday, May 2.

“I am excited, but also nervous about the unknown, winds, rain, and heavy traffic,” said Ross, who has trained for the past three months and rode 580 miles just last week.

Ross hopes to not only raise awareness, but also funding. His goal is to raise $100,000. Donations can be made at www.riding4areason.org.

The North Greenville location is proud to announce Briana Darden as our Youth of the Month for the month of March. Briana is a senior this year at North Pitt High School and has been a member of this Boys & Girls Club since August of 2007 when we opened our doors. Briana is an A & B student and a member of the Pink Panthers which is a service organization for high school females at North Pitt.

Last summer Briana and a few of the other teen members started a step team. There step team worked hard all summer and performed for the other members and parents at our end of the summer talent show. The smaller members enjoyed the step team so much that Briana and her friends assisted them in learning the steps.

Briana has shown herself to be a caring individual; staff members have witnessed her giving money to other members when they did not have snack money. She has also comforted children who were having a difficult time. Briana’s peers have nothing but nice comments to say about her and the staff is really proud of her accomplishments.

After high school, Brianna plans to attend Pitt Community College for 2 years and then transfer to the Art Institute in Raleigh, NC. Briana plans to study Culinary Arts and desires to become a chef. We are very proud of Briana and look forward to hearing good reports from her after she graduates.
